Job Application Faux Pas: How Not to Get Hired

Leaders everywhere are noticing that finding qualified, respectable applicants for available positions has become increasingly challenging these days. Job candidates tend to be outspoken during interviews, unafraid to express their employment demands, and often provide a glimpse of what they will really be like as employees.

While the era of wearing a suit and tie to an interview may be behind us, most people still aim to make a good impression during interviews and on job applications. I said MOST people. Sometimes we get to the end of the interview when a potential hire discloses that they don’t have any experience, really don’t like children (in a role that requires caring for children), or that they have been charged with anything from DUI to drug trafficking!

Recently, while interviewing for a cook for our child care center, my teammate and I were both surprised—and quite amused—by the following response written on the job application.

Here is what we found written under “Previous Employment”:

Crew - MCDONALDS! EW.

Aug - Nov. 2023

The one on Grant Street is f***ing disgusting… Hide your wife, hide your kids, and hide your husbands too.

Needless to say, the applicant did NOT meet our expectations for a desirable employee!

It certainly is lonely at the top! But moments like these remind us that leadership challenges are real, and hiring in itself comes with its own brand of entertainment. If you’ve ever felt isolated in your leadership role, just remember you’re not alone facing the unexpected.

Let’s talk about it!
